On May 31, 2024, MEDEL and its French member association Syndicat de la Magistrature held at the Paris first instance court a conference on “The role of magistrates in the construction of democracy -a European perspective”.
The conference provided an important opportunity of reflection against the backdrop of the current severe challenges for the future of democracy in Europe and its values.
The topics addressed by the speakers included the place of magistrates (as individuals and as associations) in the democratic debate, their dialogue with civil society and the examples of Poland and Italy. A section was devoted to the personal experiences of magistrates following the breakdown of democracy in Turkey.
