Justice and media

Bucharest, June 21st and 22nd 2008

Media and justice, between ambiguity and cooperation.

The relation between the media and the justice is very complex, going from the mutual support to different forms of pressure. The situation is even more ambiguous in the so called new democracies from the Central and South Eastern Europe, where the media is often controlled, and the justice system – subject of politician’s disputes.

The goal of the conference was to discuss about the way the different countries are dealing with such sensitive issues like information trickling from the magistrates to the media representatives, the protection of witnesses by the journalists, the pressures exercised through the media on the magistrates, etc., analyzing the advantages and the risks of the most frequent practices in the field and stressing a set of principles that should be followed by both media and justice representatives.
