Meeting in Florence, Italy, for its Council of Administration, MEDEL – MagistratsEuropéens pour la Démocratie et les Libertés, learnt of the passing away of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, of the Supreme Court of the United States of America.
Justice Ginsburg’s life and career was devoted to the defense of gender equality and the basic principles of law, showing us how the judiciary may help to build a more tolerant and equal society.
The deepness and strength of the reasoning of her decisions and dissenting opinions made them known and respected across the world, far beyond the borders of the United States of America. Justice Ginsburg’s decisions were a paradigmatic and universal example of where the judiciary finds its legitimacy: by applying the law in a way that strengthens human rights and freedom, with a solid and fair reasoning.
In this moment, MEDEL wishes to pay tribute to the life of Justice Ginsburg and to her contribution to the strengthening of the Rule of Law and the independent administration of justice.
