MEDEL statement on the Czech Republic

A new law has been adopted in the Czech Republic that limits judges’ remuneration. This new legislation retrospectively alters the application of an automatic method for adjusting judges’ salaries in 2025, reducing the basic assessment and consequently lowering expected salaries by around 5 %. At the same time, it cannot be overlooked that legislative or regulatory provisions introduced in 2022 and 2024, which were intended to prevent salary increases for judges, were found unconstitutional by the Constitutional Court of the Czech Republic.

In its statement of 24 July 2024[1], MEDEL recalled that financial security is an essential part of judicial independence and a prerequisite for the proper functioning of the judiciary as a whole. MEDEL therefore fully supports the European Judges Association’s statement on the limitation of judges’ remuneration in Czechia, dated 9 May 2025[2].
