MEDEL expresses its deep concern over the escalating attacks on the rule of law in the United States.
It is astonishing that in the very cradle of democracy and freedom—a country whose Constitution was the first in the world to establish the principle of separation of powers—the constitutional order is being overturned within a matter of weeks, placing the United States on a path toward authoritarianism. The history of the 20th century has clearly demonstrated the tragic consequences of unchecked executive power – even when democratically elected- when it operates on the principle of “the winner takes it all,” with no regard for the Constitution or fundamental human rights.
MEDEL expresses its full solidarity with individuals subjected to unconstitutional deportation procedures, with human rights defenders, with lawyers who unequivocally stand up for fundamental values, and with judges and prosecutors who remain steadfast in their duty to uphold the Constitution of the United States.
In particular, MEDEL stands in support of Judge Hannah Dugan, whose arrest evokes the darkest moments of European history. Such actions against independent judicial figures are not only unacceptable in a democratic society, but also represent a direct threat to the very foundations of the rule of law.
