Not a step back for a Europe of fundamental rights, solidarity and rule of law

In the aftermath of the European elections, faced with the most recent developments in national contexts and European institutions, MEDEL reaffirms that only the defence of the founding values of Europe as a community born from the defeat of totalitarian regimes and the tragedies of the last century represents the guarantee of a future  of peace and lasting democracy.

We observe with concern the advance of nationalisms and populisms, which propose a model of society no longer based on equality but rather on identity and exclusion.

We look with concern at the processes of autocratization underway in Europe, that empty democracy and erode rights and freedoms.

We look with concern at the “fortress Europe” that implements practices of systematic refoulement of migrants while tragedies unfold before our eyes in the Mediterranean Sea and at the EU’s eastern border.

We look with concern at the increasingly open and widespread use of symbols and languages recalling a past that shall never return.

The experience of democratic backsliding in Europe has taught us that civil society as a whole must act as the guardian of the freedoms we have fought for, against all projects that, in the name of the people, deny the values of our constitutions and fundamental charters.

The founders of MEDEL inscribed among its goals the establishment of a debate between magistrates from different countries in order to support and promote European Community integration and the  creation of a European political union.

MEDEL reaffirms its unwavering commitment to this goal and the defence of the fundamental values that have guaranteed the longest period of peace in our continent.
