Murat ARSLAN is free

On 17 October, Murat ARSLAN, president of the Turkish judges’ association YARSAV, was released after 3,651 days in detention, having served his full 10-year prison sentence!

I was moved to tears when I heard this long-awaited news. All those who have spoken out against his tragic and unjust fate share this emotion. MEDEL[1], of course, but also all the organisations and public figures who stood by our side us in support of Murat.

All this was done with the support of representatives from national and international institutions defending human rights. Everyone has admired his courage and his deep, unwavering and steadfast commitment to fundamental principles.

And what a sense of humanity he displayed! A shining beacon for judges!

I shall never forget that deeply moving and powerful moment when the Václav Havel Human Rights Prize was awarded. Yes, on 9 October 2017, in an unprecedented move, a judge – Murat Arslan – received this prize for his infinitely courageous and uncompromising struggle for the independence of the judiciary. What a symbol of the role of the judiciary in the protection of human rights!

Having been imprisoned for a year, Murat was unable to receive this prize in person. So, as co-founder of MEDEL, I had the immense honour of representing him at the ceremony before the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, by delivering his acceptance speech. Thus, Murat’s words echoed across Europe as I read his speech with honour and emotion.

It concluded as follows: “I extend my respectful greetings to each and every one of you, along with my hope and belief in a bright future built on peace and respect for human dignity.”

In a world where war rages across many lands and inflicts suffering on peoples, children, women and men, we must, more than ever, proclaim this final sentence loud and clear. From now on, Murat Arslan will stand by our side as a free man.
