All across Europe the defense of independent courts and their ability to protect the fundamental human rights of all citizens appear as an urgent priority.
Since 2016 Polish judges have resisted the authoritarian destruction of the institution they serve, both in the courtrooms and outside them. They have gathered invaluable experience for the rest of Europe now faced by similar challenges.
Medel participates in the Rafto Foundation project, which aims to share the lessons learned from these years of democratic regression in Europe and Poland.
Monika Frąckowiak and Mariarosaria Guglielmi, together with Iver Ørstavik– Senior Adviser at the Rafto Foundation for Human Rights, Paulina Kieszkowska, co-founder of the civil society organization Wolne Sądy/Free Courts,and John Dalhuisen, Senior Fellow at European Stability Initiative met on 6 November at the Fondazione Basso in Rome with human rights and other civil society organizations and on 7 November with the Associazione Nazionale Magistrati.
Two days of intense exchange of views on the current challenges to the rule of law and judicial independence in Europe and its member states, and on the role that professional and other civil society organizations play in supporting the resilience of these values.
