Mariarosaria Guglielmi, president of Medel , took part in the online conference on effective access to legal aid for prisoners “Enforcing rights and accessing justice from pre-trial detention: European perspectives”, organized by the EPLN-European Prison Litigation Network, the Centre for European Constitutional Law – Tsatsos Foundation, ZMINA and Forum Penal.
With contributions from experts representing civil society organisations and bar associations, as well as researchers and international experts, the conference addressed the issue of the structural, procedural and financial barriers that hinder prisoners’ effective access to legal aid. Mariarosaria Guglielmi spoke on the subject of criminal justice and security policies in the age of populism, as well as on the pressures facing the role of judicial systems in safeguarding rights and freedoms.
