On June 15th 1985, European magistrates and associations of magistrates convened in Strasbourg to constitute MEDEL.
Among their goals was “the establishment of a common debate among magistrates from different countries”, “the defense of the independence of the judiciary in the face of every other power as well as of specific interests”, “the democratization of the judiciary”, “the respect, in all circumstances, of the legal values specific to the democratic state based on the rule of law” and “the proclamation and the defense of the rights of minorities and of differences, and in particular the rights of immigrants and the most deprived, in a perspective of social emancipation of the weakest”.
36 years later, MEDEL pays tribute to all its founders and pledges to keep fighting for those same values.

Le 15 juin 1985, des magistrats et associations de magistrats européens se sont réunis à Strasbourg pour constituer MEDEL.
Parmi leurs objectifs figuraient “l’instauration d’un débat commun entre les magistrats de différents pays”, “la défense de l’indépendance du pouvoir judiciaire face à tout autre pouvoir ainsi qu’à des intérêts particuliers”, “la démocratisation du pouvoir judiciaire”, “le respect, en toutes circonstances, des valeurs juridiques propres à l’Etat de droit démocratique” et “la proclamation et la défense des droits des minorités et des différences, et en particulier des droits des immigrés et des plus démunis, dans une perspective d’émancipation sociale des plus faibles”.
36 ans plus tard, MEDEL rend hommage à tous ses fondateurs et s’engage à continuer à se battre pour ces mêmes valeurs.
