Closing event of “Roulez justice! Pour Murat Aslan et l’État de droit” 1 May 2026, Ventimiglia
Following its last leg in France, “Roulez Justice! Pour Murat Aslan et l’État de droit” has left Nice and, after crossing the border, completed its journey on 1 May in Ventimiglia.
The closing event – organised by MEDEL, Syndicat de la magistrature, Délibérée and Magistratura democratica – brought together judges, prosecutors, lawyers, representatives of NGOs and civil society in a public meeting to discuss the protection of migrants’ rights, at a crucial moment of structural changes to migration law linked to the New Pact on Migration and Asylum, and the redefinition of the European area of rights with new border procedures.
By choosing a symbolic location such as Ventimiglia, Roulez Justice! sought to emphasise that Rule of law means not only separation of powers, but also commitment to the legal and moral obligations enshrined in our Charters and Conventions, regarding the primacy of the person, the universality of human rights, and the protection of the most vulnerable.
Drawing on experiences across various fields, the presentations helped to examine the implications of the New Pact and the risk that practices which in recent years have led to the violation of the fundamental rights of migrants, at both Europe’s external and internal borders, might be legalised.
Through the testimony of those working on the ground to offer support to migrants and witnessing first- hand their suffering, the violence during pushbacks at the border and the tragedy of the many who have lost their lives attempting to cross it, the meeting in Ventimiglia served as a stark reminder of the founding values of Europe, from which migration policies are distancing us ethically and legally.
