MEDEL has followed with great attention the process of electing new judicial members of the Polish National Council of the Judiciary.
The Polish Parliament ultimately elected 15 new members, including 13 out of the 15 candidates jointly endorsed by the majority of judicial associations in Poland.
Prior to the parliamentary vote, judges across Poland participated in a confidential voting process, expressing their support – or lack thereof – for the nominated candidates.
This stage of the process also represented an important expression — and, in many respects, a celebration – of judicial self-governance, demonstrating the judiciary’s engagement and sense of responsibility for its own institutions.
As a result, for the first time since 2018, the majority of the Council’s composition consists of judges chosen by their peers. The ongoing efforts to restore judicial independence and rebuild public trust in the justice system remain of crucial importance for the rule of law in Poland and across Europe.
MEDEL will continue to closely follow developments concerning the judiciary and the protection of judicial independence.
